International Horse Identification Registry

What are good identification traits?

These are some ideas for things to look for on your horse that make him or her stand apart from other horses close up. These can make a big difference!

Scars: marks from old injuries or muscle dents can be great identifiers. So can torn ears, pin firing marks on the legs, and leg abnormalities like large splints.

Hair Swirls: All horses have at least one swirl in the hair on their forehead. Some horses can have two, three, four, etc. They also commonly have them on their cheeks and necks.

Saddle spots: A lot of older horse sport white spots on their withers and backs from old saddle injuries. These are very unique!
