International Horse Identification Registry

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.
Why do I need a registry when I have a bill of sale?

A.
First, to prove that the horse you bought is now yours. Pulling out a piece of paper that states you bought a red gelding does not determine which red gelding is yours. Even if you know that red gelding is named Tom and you bought him for $2,000.

Q.
Does horse theft really exist?

A.
Absolutely! Please visit our Links section to see some web sites devoted solely to horse theft. Identify theft is a big issue as well. This is why the Jockey Club tattoos all of its horses on the track, and the Standardbred racehorses as well.

Q.
Can I transfer my registration over from a breed registry?

A.
Unfortunately, no. We are a separate company and are independent from all other registries and associations. We do want to have a wonderful working relationship with all other registries.

Q.
I don’t have current photos of my horse. Can I send foal photos?

A.
No. The whole purpose of the registry is to be as accurate to your horse as he is now as possible. There are very few horses who look the same as a yearling as they do now that they are 15 yrs old. For ideas on how to get good pictures, see the section on How to Take a Good Picture.
